Today, IIT Kharagpur has
come a long way to its present
position of pre-eminence with
nineteen academic departments,
seven multidisciplinary centres,
a School of Management, a
School of Telecommunications,
a School of Medical Science
and Technology, a School of
Information Technology and
a School of Intellectual Property
Law named after Rajiv Gandhi,
and several sophisticated
central facilities. It is
the largest and the most diversified
among the IITs and strives
to produce scientists and
technologists of the highest
calibre to help the nation
become self-reliant in its
technological needs and to
provide leadership in the
field of technical education
and research. Some of the
distinctive features of the
programmes at IIT Kharagpur
are science based engineering
education, emphasis on complete
education, continuous internal
evaluation and flexibility
for experimentation, up gradation
and innovation in curriculum
design. IIT Kharagpur has
a number of distinctions to
its credit among all the IITs,
such as the First Master's
programme on Management, First
Master's Programme on Medical
Science and Technology for
practicing Medical Doctors,
First Postgraduate Diploma
in Information Technology.
In a study, sponsored by the
Department of Science and
Technology, Government of
India, IIT Kharagpur has the
highest relative employment
productivity index among the
IITs and is the top supplier
of fresh engineers/technologists
to the public and private
sector industries. It also
ranked first among the IITs
in the production of science
and engineering PhDs.

STRUCTURE OF THE INSTITUTE |

| Eligibility
and Assistantship for Regular
Applicants |
1.
Applicants under all categories
must possess a Bachelor's degree
in Engineering/ Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy
or qualifications obtained through
examinations conducted by professional
societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE,
e.g. AMIE or a Masters degree
in Science/Arts.
2. Applicants must qualify in
the paper appropriate to the
discipline of their qualifying
degree if a GATE paper is available
in such a discipline. Only for
those disciplines where there
is no relevant GATE paper, XE/XL
paper of the GATE examination
is applicable. NET qualified
applicants could be eligible
for admission to MCP.
3. Applicants qualifying in
XE or XL paper in GATE and/or
those with a professional qualification
(AMIE, etc.) recognized by the
AICTE will have to undergo an
interview and/or test at IIT
Kharagpur on 28th May 2008 (Wednesday).
Before being considered for
admission, the applicant has
to qualify in the interview
and/or test.
4. Seats are reserved for applicants
under SC/ST category and for
persons with disability as per
rules of the Government of India.
Reservation for OBC candidates
is as per MHRD guidelines.
5. Applicants must be in good
health. In case of any discrepancy
found in the certificate of
medical fitness to be submitted
during registration, the opinion
of the Institute Medical Officer
will be final.
6. Persons with Disability seeking
admission to various postgraduate
programmes are to appear before
a medical board on 28th May,
at IIT Kharagpur.
7. Selection of applicants whose
results in the qualifying degree
examination are yet to be declared
will be provisional, subject
to condition that all parts
of the examination must be completed
in all respects before the date
of joining the Institute (tentatively
22nd July .2008) and the marks
sheet/certificate as evidence
of passing the qualifying examination
to be submitted latest by the
time of registration for the
second semester.
8. IIT BTech graduates having
CGPA score 8.00 or above may
be admitted to the postgraduate
programme without GATE score,
and conditional to the Institute
norms. Such applicants should
contact the GATE Office of IIT
Kharagpur for further details.
9. Regular Applicants admitted
on the basis of GATE score to
postgraduate programmes are
eligible for an assistantship
of Rs. 5000 per month for the
duration of the course
10. An applicant admitted to
a postgraduate programme with
assistantship will not be eligible
for admission with assistantship
in any other programme at this
or any other Institution on
the basis of the same GATE scorecard.
11. Some Scholarships/fellowships
are also available to the selected
applicants by GE, DAE, DRDO,
& DAAD (Germany).
12. For the course in Rubber
Technology, one endowment assistantship
(Rs. 2500 p.m.) is available,
to be awarded subsequent to
the admission to one of the
applicants on a 'Merit- cum-Means'
basis. |
| Admission Procedure |
1. On receipt
of a counselling letter (by second
week of May, 2008) the applicants
are required to report to the
Institute for counselling with
the original GATE Scorecard and
a Demand Draft (in favour of "IIT
Kharagpur" on any nationalised
bank payable at Kharagpur, West
Bengal) for the Autumn semester
fee. This non-refundable fee is
Rs. 6,200 for GENERAL and OBC
Category & for Persons with
Disability (PD) and Rs. 3,700
for SC/ST Category.
2. At the time of counselling,
applicants, one-by-one in order
of merit as per GATE score, will
be offered seats depending upon
their eligibility and options
given under 'Choice of Course'
in the Application Form.
3. The applicant must produce
the relevant Certificates in Original.
Selection within the categories
(PD/ST/SC /GN) will be dictated
by the GATE performance and the
'Choice of Course' given by the
applicant.
4. Selected applicants will be
given an offer of admission on
the spot and they will hand over
the original GATE Scorecard and
the Bank Draft towards fees and
deposits at the designated counter
on the same day. Those applicants
who do not report for counselling
will not be eligible for admission
in the session.
5. The Institute will bear no
responsibility for any postal
delay in receiving the counselling
letter.
